What does SOM Outreach do?
SOM Outreach provides business and management advice to New
Haven area organizations that are unable to afford comparable
services elsewhere.
What can SOM Outreach offer?
SOM Outreach Consultants have a wide range of experience in
nonprofit, public and private organizations. At SOM, students
develop additional general management skills in such areas as
marketing, finance, accounting, statistics, economic analysis,
and organizational development. SOM Outreach provides the
opportunity for students to put these skills to use and to
generate concrete solutions for their clients.
How does SOM Outreach operate?
The SOM Outreach coordinators solicit client projects, recruit
interested students, and provide support for ongoing projects.
Prospective clients submit proposals and are selected based on
the goals and feasibility of the project as well as
opportunities for student learning. Project teams of three to
six first-year SOM students work with clients to identify
specific needs, clarify expectations, and outline resource
commitments on yearlong consulting projects. Each team has a
second-year advisor, who helps to guide the project. In
addition, a faculty advisor works with each team to provide
expertise and assist with the planning of the consulting
process.
