The students at Yale School of Management have helped make this
a gay-friendly and supportive environment for living and learning.
Yale SOM has been known for many years as one of America’s most
diverse and accepting business schools.
Networking among the major business schools has increased significantly
over the past few years, and SOM was at the forefront of these efforts,
building connections with gay and lesbian students all over the
country. SOM co-founded the 1st Annual Gay & Lesbian Business
Conference in 1999, held at Harvard University. This national event
was the first of its kind and a great success, bringing together
almost 150 MBA students and alumni from all over the country.
This past March 2000, the tradition was continued at Wharton in
Philadelphia with "Working OUT 2000", the 2nd Annual Gay
and Lesbian Business Conference. In what turned into a media event
covered by ABC World News Tonight and major national newspapers,
Working OUT 2000 attracted over 400 MBA students, alumni and Fortune
500 recruiters. McKinsey & Co., ATKearney, JPMorgan, IBM, PlanetOut,
Booz-Allen, Boston Consulting Group and The Gay Financial Network
sponsored the event. Speakers included US Ambassador to Luxembourg,
James Hormel, Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign, Elizabeth
Birch, and US Congressman Barney Frank.
The 3rd Annual Gay and Lesbian MBA Conference is expected to take
place on the west coast next year and should build on this success.
Yale SOM will continue to be involved in the event, helping to organize
a panel session entitled "Communicating Gay Friendliness"
and sending another strong contingent from New Haven.
Along with gay and lesbian MBA’s at other top business schools,
we attended panel discussions and recruiting dinners at JPMorgan
Chase, American Express, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte
Consulting, McKinsey & Co., and Bain & Co.
Closer to home, the Q+ Alliance sponsored a number of potlucks
and social events with students at SOM. With the Investment Management
SIG, the Q+ Alliance co-sponsored Alumni Joe Daniel of the Critical
Infrastructure Fund to speak at SOM.
