Q+ Gay/Straight Alliance - Coming Out Resources

Coming out is a rewarding, though sometimes challenging, process. Since the early 1970s, students at Yale University have worked hard to ensure that this is gay-friendly and supportive environment. Yale School of Management is part of this rich history and for many years has been known as one of America's most diverse and accepting business schools.

Q+: The Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Straight Alliance strives to be a group that serves the needs of ALL students at SOM. The group recognizes that people are at different stages of coming out--participating in Alliance activities does not mean that you have to be out, or even bisexual, gay, or lesbian. We endeavor to create a friendly and welcoming environment for the discussion of sexual issues, in and outside the classroom and workplace, and encourage your participation.

Yale University Health Services
Yale University Health Service on Hillhouse Avenue offers a variety of services to students who have questions about sexuality and sexual orientation. Services are free to students and their families covered under the Yale Health Plan.

  • Graduate Student General Health Needs
    The staff in the Internal Medicine Department provide primary care to graduate and professional students. Appointments are available for routine, ongoing, and wellness care by calling (203) 432-7529. The department also operates the Graduate Medicine Clinic for graduate and professional students who have urgent medical needs. Call (203) 432-7529 for more information.
  • Mental Health
    Mental health care is offered by YUHS through the Division of Mental Hygiene. Consultations, on-going counseling, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention are available to all students. Please call (203) 432-0290 for appointments. In emergencies, please call the department during business hours (8:00am to 6:00pm weekdays); after hours, please call the Urgent Care Department at (203) 432-0123.
  • Student Peer Health Educators
    Student Peer Health Educators are undergraduates trained to provide information and peer counseling; they specialize in concerns of relationships and sexuality. SPHE primarily serves undergraduates in Yale College, but SOM students and other graduate students are also welcome to call (203) 432-1892 for assistance.
  • AIDS Resource & Counseling Center
    The AIDS Resource & Counseling Center provides confidential, nonjudgmental consultation and counseling about HIV/AIDS for members of the Yale University community. For information, call (203) 432-1826.

Outland
Outland is a group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and transgender graduate and professional students, faculty, and staff at Yale University.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Cooperative
The LGBT Co-op is an undergraduate organization. Its purpose is to foster and encourage an environment at Yale in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people express themselves academically, artistically, socially, and politically. The Co-op sponsors various confidential discussion groups for the Yale community.

Religious Counseling and Services
There are gay-supportive religious clergy for virtually every major religious denomination in the New Haven area. For more information, please contact Cynthia Terry in the University Chaplain's Office at (203) 432-1131.

The New Haven Gay & Lesbian Community Center
Serving the needs of the bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgendered communities of greater New Haven, Connectictut.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
