David S. Ingalls Hockey Park
Yale University, New
Haven, Connecticut
Just
across the street from the Yale School of Management stands Ingalls
Rink - aka "The Whale". The rink is named in honor of David S. Ingalls
(Yale '20), who twice captained the Yale hockey team, and his son
David Jr. '56 who served as captain of his freshman and varsity
teams. Gifts from the Ingalls family provided the bulk of the funding
for its construction.
The rink was built in
1958 by Eero Saarinen (Architect), Douglas Orr (Associate Architect),
and Severud-Elstad-Krueger (Engineer). The roof consists of two
saddle surfaces spanning between three arches. The roof is 23.2
m high at its zenith. The cable nets are covered with wood decking.
