In March 2005, 26 SOM students traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa to volunteer with a dozen NGOs and non-profits. Each student contributed 15-35 hours of voluntary service.

NGOs / non-profits included:

• Schools for underprivileged adult learners/children
• AIDS center
• Orphanages
• Youth centers
• Small-medium enterprise development
  
  Volunteer work included:
• Teaching children/adults in classrooms
• Funding/grant proposal development
• General strategy related to funding, evaluation/monitoring
• Concept papers on various topics related to economic development
• Web development
• Mural Painting
