Since joining Keller Williams as Chief Executive Officer in 1995, Mo has shepherded the company from 35 sales offices to more than 280. She has been the keeper of the firm’s value system, relentlessly articulating and living out its precepts for thousands of agents across North America. Known at times as the “Velvet Hammer” for her uncompromising approach, Mo is equally regarded for her decency, her Christian faith, and her ability to inspire and lead others. It’s interesting to note that throughout her years with Keller Williams, Mo has successfully mediated all internal conflicts without once resorting to litigation—a testimony to her good judgment and quality of character.
Originally an elementary school music teacher, Mo’s first love—even before her husband of over 45 years, Richard—was the piano. Mo taught music for fourteen years before entering the real estate field, quickly finding her gift not only for the profession but for the world of business. She established her first real estate office, a Century 21 franchise, in Edmond, Oklahoma in 1975; soon after, it was the third top-producing office out of 7,500 Century 21 locations in North America. In 1986 Mo sold her company to Merrill Lynch Realty, where she served as a district Vice President until December 1989.
She was appointed to the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission in 1986, and eventually served two terms as Chairman of the Commission.
Mo’s standing in the real estate community did not insulate her from the collapse of the oil business in Oklahoma in the late 1980’s. Faced with the falling economy, Mo was placed into the worst period of financial challenge she had ever experienced. In response she formed ProDevelopment™ systems a training and consulting company, in 1990, servicing clients in Oklahoma and Texas for a period of nearly two years.
It was during this difficult period, in 1991, that Mo encountered the biggest opportunity of her life in the person of Gary Keller. Meeting Gary for the first time, she became absolutely convinced of the power of the Keller Williams concept, Mo persuaded Gary to expand his profit share concept for the first time outside the Texas borders. In 1992 she became a Keller Williams Realty licensee, landing the regional director role for Oklahoma and became the co-owner of two Keller Williams Market Centers in Oklahoma.
Two years later, Gary put forth a call to all his regional directors to help him find a new top executive for the company. Gary’s extensive search only revealed that his “talent” was in his own backyard. In January 1995, Mo Anderson agreed to become president and Chief Executive Officer of Keller Williams Realty, with Gary stepping up to the position of chairman of the board. Mo held both titles until 2002 when Mark Willis was made president and Darren Bien was named chief operations officer. Mo currently serves as Chief Executive Officer.
Still focused on the future, Mo intends to spend the next five years solidifying Keller Williams’ growth. In addition to helping hone Keller Williams University® and the company’s EagentC™ agent-focused technology initiative, she is committed to helping Mark Willis build the company’s cadre of top-producing agents to 27,000 by the end of 2003 and 50,000 by 2005. Her ultimate dream: to see Keller Williams become a company of 150,000 associates, all leaders in their local markets.
A tireless supporter of community causes, Mo Anderson has been named twice as Oklahoma’s Women in Business Advocate of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. She also is listed in Who’s Who in American Women, and was one of ten women profiled in Body and Soul (Hill Publishing). She serves, or has served, on the boards of Edmond Memorial Hospital, the Francis Tuttle Vo-Tech Foundation, and the Daily Living Center. Mo’s passion for helping others is seen in her contributions to the Gregg Foundation and the KW Cares, Inc. 501 (C) foundation she began in 2002.
