2004 China Study Trip
Biography of Participants
 |
Professor Zhiwu Chen
Professor Chen is an expert on finance theory, securities
valuation, emerging markets, and China's economy and capital
markets. Dr. Chen is a frequent contributor to top economics
and finance journals with research papers ranging from novel
means of valuing stocks and pricing options, to studies of
foreign exchange, market integration, mutual funds and profitable
investment strategies. In the last few years, Dr. Chen has
been actively doing research on market development and institution-building
issues in the context of China's transition process and other
emerging markets. What institutions are necessary for markets
to develop? What roles do financial innovations play in a
country's economic development process? These are among the
issues which Dr. Chen's research focuses on. Dr. Chen's work
has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York
Times, The Boston Globe, Barron's, Far-Eastern Economic Review,
and many newspapers and magazines in Hong Kong and China.
He is also a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines
in China, on economic policy and legal reform issues. |

Amy Lu
Amy is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Marketing and Finance. Prior to her MBA study,
she worked as a strategic consultant and software engineer
for Sinosync, BroadVision and IBM in Silicon Valley. Amy is
an active member of the Greater China Club,
Marketing Student Interest Group and Finance Student Interest
Group at Yale School of Management. She is also a member of
the due diligence team of Sachem Ventures, a venture capital
firm funded by Yale University and run by Yale MBA students. |

Chetan Prabhu
Chetan is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance and Strategy. He received his Bachelors
degree in engineering with a focus in computer science/engineering
from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art
in New York City with a four-year, full-tuition scholarship.
During his senior year there, he served as Co-Editor in Chief
of the campus newspaper, The Cooper Pioneer. In 1999, he was
inducted into Eta Kappa Nu, a national engineering honor society,
and in 2000, he won the R.G. Brown memorial prize in humanities.
After graduating from The Cooper Union, Chetan spent three
years working at Merrill Lynch in their Investment Banking
and Client Technologies group in New York. While there, he
applied his technology skills towards creating a Client Relationship
Management system used by nearly four thousand Merrill Lynch
Institutional salespeople worldwide. Chetan's interests lie
in the financial services industry and the capital markets,
and he also has a keen interest in technology and the internet. |

Chi Lai
Chi is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Strategy and Finance. He completed his undergraduate
studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received
dual-degrees in Economics (BA) and Engineering (BSE). Prior
to SOM, Chi worked at Deloitte Consulting as a senior consultant,
focusing on business and IT strategies for Fortune 500 clients
and U.S. government agencies. He is interested in pursuing
a career in corporate strategy for multi-national corporations
in China. |

Colm Rafferty
Colm is a second year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance. An honors graduate of Choate and
Brown University, Colm has spent his entire career focused
on international trade. He has worked in textile manufacturing
and logistics in Taiwan, for the Singapore Government's Trade
Development Board, and as a Director for Business Development
at Alibaba.com, a Chinese internet company that specializes
in promoting international trade for small-to-medium sized
enterprises. He is especially interested in issues of corporate
social responsibility, and is a co-coordinator for the Greater
China Student Interest Group and the Catholic Student Interest
Group at Yale. He is also the founder of both the China Study
Trip and the school's China Business Lecture Series. After
graduation Colm will return to Beijing to work as Dealer Distribution
Business Manager for Cummins Engine Company. |

David Greenbaum
David is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Marketing and Strategy. David's interest
lies in managing the development and deployment of large scale
technology solutions to grow businesses globally. As a project
manager at Goldman Sachs, David coordinated business, technology,
and communications groups to execute a single vision. Prior
to this, David founded Live Building, a technology company
which designed intranets for residential apartment buildings.

Evelyn
Huangfu
Evelyn is a second year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Finance. Over the summer, she
rotated through Sales and Trading positions as a participant
in Goldman Sachs' internship program in Hong Kong. Prior to
business school, Evelyn helped to establish Goldman Sachs'
Taipei branch as a controller. She also worked as a public
accountant for PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York. Evelyn
earned a B.S. in Accounting from New York University in 1998.
She has backpacked through China, Southeast Asia, and Europe,
and recently hiked to Annapurna Base Camp in the Himalayan
Range. |

Fi Cheng
Fi is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Strategy. Prior to attending SOM, she lived
and worked in China for four years. As an Associate at Automotive
Resources Asia, she provided market strategy and communications
advice to multinational automotives companies in the PRC.
Fi managed the Green Diesel lobbying campaign on behalf of
seven OEMs including Cummins, DaimlerChrysler, Bosche, Volvo
and Caterpillar. As a consultant at Claydon Gescher Associates,
Fi developed market entry strategies, advised on regulatory
and policy issues, and provided risk assessment, partner identification
and due diligence to multinationals in the media, telecom,
energy and financial sectors. Fi is also active in the ultimate
frisbee community. She co-captained a team that went to the
World Club Championships, chaired the Beijing club team for
two years, and now plays with the New York women's team, Ambush. |

Fuphan
Chou
Fuphan is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
and is also jointly enrolled in the Yale School of Environmental
Studies, where she is working towards a Master of Environmental
Management degree.. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics
at Yale, and most recently worked at Deutsche Bank in Strategic
Planning within the Equities Division. Fuphan has a keen interest
in the environmental implications of China's rapid growth,
and hopes to play an active role in China's emerging opportunities
within the field of environmental finance. |

Jonathon Swersey
Jonathan is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Finance and Strategy. Upon graduating
from Binghamton University with a B.Sc. in Biology, Jonathon
worked for Publishers Clearing House as a computer programmer.
After two promotions, he was the firm's Marketing Technology
Analyst where he focused on cross-channel marketing strategies.
He left PCH for Datek Online Holdings, an online broker that
was profitable from inception. Jonathon held positions in
both marketing and finance at Datek and was part of the team
that consummated the $1.6 billion merger of Datek and Ameritrade.
After Datek, Jonathon was a private consultant for clients
such as HotJobs.com, the Cooke Center for Learning and Development,
Manhattan Tour and Travel, and others. Jonathon hopes to pursue
a career in management consulting and views this trip to China
as a chance to expand his global business knowledge. |

Joshua Chuang
Joshua is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Strategy and Marketing. He has a particular
interest in applying these concepts to the nonprofit sector.
Prior to attending Yale, Joshua worked in the fine art business,
managing a well-known gallery in New York City. Joshua is
also an acclaimed photographer whose work has been exhibited
at The Museum of Chinese in the Americas in New York and featured
in The New York Times. |

Kevin Ye
Kevin is a second year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Strategy. He is a member of the Yale SOM
Student Steering Committee and a co-coordinator of the Greater
China Student Interest Group. Prior to attending Yale University,
Kevin worked as a Business Planning Manager at Hewlett-Packard's
$4 billion Business Critical Solution Group (BCSG) in Silicon
Valley. He was instrumental in coordinating the formation
of BCSG Global Support organization, combining Compaq/Digital/Tandem
global heritage service and support functions. Kevin was also
part of the integration team for the HP and Compaq merger.
Kevin received a Bachelor of Business Administration from
the University of Michigan Business School. |

Mélanie Rogers
Mélanie is a first year MBA student at the Yale School
of Management concentrating in Strategy and Finance. Prior
to SOM, she was a Partner at Millennium Research Group (MRG),
a strategic research and consulting firm focused on the global
healthcare sector. During her time at MRG, her work experiences
spanned over 20 countries throughout Latin America, North
America, Western Europe, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific
region. In her role as Director of Research and Development,
she was responsible for establishing MRG's syndicated and
customized global research engagements, performing technical
and financial due diligence assessments of new technologies,
and spearheading strategic consulting engagements for leading
medical technology firms throughout the world. Mélanie's
experience at MRG has also involved serving as an expert witness
for one of the world's leading law firms; presenting research
findings at an annual shareholder meeting for a large US firm,
and advising senior management on prospective acquisition
targets in the medical sector. Mélanie currently serves
as a graduate fellow at Yale University, and is actively involved
in adventure racing. She holds a degree in Engineering and
Applied Science, specializing in biomedical engineering, from
the University of Toronto. |

Mike Huang
Mike is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance and Strategy. Prior to attending
Yale SOM, Mike worked at Babcock & Brown, LP, a boutique
investment bank in San Francisco, specializing in aircraft
financing. Prior to that, he worked in the oil and gas industry
as a geophysicist for Schlumberger in Texas, Mexico and the
Gulf of Mexico. Mike holds a B.S. in Geology and Geophysics
from Yale University. |

Min Xu
Mindy is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance and Strategy. Prior to SOM, Mindy
worked for IBM Global Services in Connecticut, USA. She has
five years IT experiences in design and implementing technology
solutions for Fortune 500 clients, which span a variety of
industries. In addition to her IT consulting experience, Mindy
has accounting and finance experiences with IBM Tax Department
and Merrill Lynch, respectively. Mindy holds a dual BS degree
in Management Information Systems and Accounting. |

Natasha Walji
Natasha is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Strategy and Marketing. Natasha
has a management consulting background with a focus in technology.
As a Consultant with Deloitte Consulting, she was part of
the eTechnology Integration practice. At Deloitte, Natasha
worked with large clients to implement various technologies,
including J2EE, IBM products, Siebel and Oracle. Her technical
expertise is broad and encompasses programming, developer
training and designing/architecting applications. In addition,
her industry exposure has included biotechnology, communications,
energy, manufacturing and financial services. Natasha has
also consulted for Infilink Corporation where she was the
technical lead for a new internet/wireless product launched
to the financial services market. In addition, she worked
closely with Infilink's senior management advising on matters
such as organizational risk, market positioning, developing
efficiencies and increasing profit margins. Natasha's interest
in China stems from her strong interest in technology, emerging
markets and different cultures. She seeks to better understand
the application of technology opportunities for business development
and the legal system in China. Natasha has a Bachelor of Science
degree in Computer Science from the University of Victoria
(Canada). |

Nick Halliwell
Nick is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance and Strategy. Nick worked in Russia
for six years between 1997 and 2003. As a project manager
for Millhouse Capital, a Russian private equity house, he
led a project to restructure a major meat processing company
in Siberia, in addition to working on M&A transactions
across a variety of sectors. Prior to entering the private
equity industry, he handled communications for a major Russian
oil company, Sibneft. Nick began his career as a journalist
for oil industry publisher Energy Intelligence Group, based
in London and Moscow. Nick received his undergraduate degree
from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. |

Qiongna Ma
Qiongna is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Marketing. She has seven years
of marketing experience in China. Prior to working for Cambridge
ESOL, UK at its Beijing office, she was a Senior Project Manager
at China National Education Examinations Authority. She has
in-depth knowledge of such industries as education, publishing
and media in China. Qiongna is both a practitioner and a researcher.
Among the projects she managed, the most well-known is "Cambridge
Young Learners English Test", which currently has a candidate
pool of over 3.5 million learners. Her team set up an unsurpassed
record increase of customers (test-takers) of 200% three years
in a row. Qiongna also conducted academic research in educational
measurement and published several papers in major industry
journals in China. Ms. Ma holds a bachelors degree in Intercultural
and Mass Communications from Peking University.

Rebecca Chua
Rebecca is a second year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Finance. She was also elected
as coordinator of the school Finance Students Interest Group
at SOM. Prior to joining Yale SOM, Rebecca was with the corporate
banking group of Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong, and
has worked in corporate relationship management, credit analytics,
strategy and credit card marketing functions while at the
Bank. Rebecca holds a BBA in Accounting from the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology, and is a member of the
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the UK. |

Xiaocheng She
Xiaocheng is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of
Management concentrating in Marketing and Strategy. Xiocheng
graduated with B.A. in American Literature from Shanghai International
Studies University. He gained substantial first-hand experience
working as media planner and advertising budgeter for LG Electronics
China Marketing Headquarters. Xiaocheng later joined Bertelsmann
Shanghai, where he executed the company's largest direct marketing
campaigns in China, as Media and Public Relation manager.
His strong interest in marketing and strategy relocated him
as project owner of FedEx China Expansion and Conversion programs. |

Wechen
Foo
Wechen is a first year MBA student at the Yale School of Management
concentrating in Finance and Strategy. He holds a B.A. in
biology from Columbia University. Prior to business school,
he worked in New York City for Analysis Group, Inc., which
provides financial and economic consulting services in litigation
and research matters. Wechen worked on projects for Fortune
100 companies, the American Stock Exchange, and technology
startups. His interests include Southeast Asian culture, baseball
history, and rafting. He is excited to visit China for the
first time. |
