What is Yale SOM Net Impact?
SOM Net Impact is a club that connects and inspires MBA students who are committed to integrating business success and social impact.
We fulfill our mission by fostering a community of likeminded students, faculty and alumni, educating that community on current topics and events related to social impact, and advocating for curriculum, admissions and career development support.
SOM Net Impact provides the following to our community:
- Forums for learning and discussion
- Career exploration and guidance
- Channels for accessing resources and building connections
- A newsletter of events, opportunities, and current research

Register for National Net Impact Membership
If you're interested in being involved in Net Impact at SOM, we encourage you to join the national organization. Annual membership dues are only $25 and the benefits are many, including a great job board, reduced conference registration fees, networking opportunities and interesting publications. We also recommend registering for the online NI community, which offers further possibilities for networking and communications.

2008 Net Impact Annual Conference
Everyone's headed to Philly! The 2008 Annual Net Impact Conference will take place in Philadelphia, PA on November 13-15. The Conference includes keynote speakers, panel discussions, networking opportunities, case competitions, debates and more. This year's conference focuses on The Sustainable Advantage: Creating Social and Environmental Value", with curriculum on: CSR, energy and environment, international development, social impact finance, and social entrepreneurship. Yale SOM Net Impact Awarded Honorable Mention at 2007 National Net Impact Conference!

At the 2007 Net Impact Conference held in Nashville, Yale SOM earned an honorable mention for Chapter of the Year and had the highest attendance of all business schools. It was another strong showing for SOM after winning runner-up last year and top honors the year before.

1st Years: Sign up for a Net Impact committee

The Net Impact committees need your help! There are a number of opportunities for 1st years to get involved, varying in topic, responsibility, and time commitment. Please review the various opportunities below. This is a great way for first-years to gain leadership experience within Net Impact before its time to fully transition in the spring. (This does not mean that only students who take on first-year roles now can be involved later, but these opportunities will help in transferring institutional knowledge between classes.)
Please respond by Monday, September 29, 5 PM to the specific second-years who manage the area(s) that youre interested in (email contact below) with a few sentences about why youre interested in the position and what ideas you may have for the year.
FUNCTIONAL LIAISON ROLES
Communications Liaison(s) (Email Josh.Pashman@yale.edu)
Write weekly profiles of first and second year students who have been involved in Net Impact related careers and/or internships
Track social sector internships and jobs on MBA Focus and other websites that those seeking jobs may overlook
Seek out and track the latest Net Impact related happenings around Yale; work with Communications team to gather information about these events to inform Net Impact members
Admissions Liaison (Email John.Jewell@yale.edu)
Assist in responding to email inquiries from prospective students interested in Net Impact or social enterprise at SOM
Join current Admissions Outreach Chair in meeting visiting students once/week in Food for Thought to answer questions and provide student perspective about SOM and Net Impact
Eventually, establish his/her own time for meeting prospective students once/week
Career Development Liaison (Email Kate.Forester@yale.edu)
Serve as first year representative, ensuring Net Impact members internship/career interests are being identified and supported, and student feedback delivered to the CDO
Generate ideas for additional programs and process improvements to facilitate the career search process for both first and second years and institutionalize this relationship
Flesh out ideas and clarify improvements to provide support for next years Net Impact/CDO liaisons

Benchmark our social curricular offerings against those of other top business schools
Assist in creation of a predictive model for class social course demand
Perform due diligence on the Beyond Grey Pinstripes report to see where we need to improve
Work with NI co-chairs & Curriculum Leader to make the case to SOM administration for targeted changes/solutions

Coordinate and communicate conference logistics with SOM student delegation
Serve as an information resource for fellow students
Assist in implementing a promotion strategy to generate excitement and participation among students
Assist with implementation of conference logistics such as transportation coordination, reimbursement requests, etc.

Create an SOM-Net Impact young alumni network
Begin to establish an institutional network of SOM-Net Impact alumni
Gather current SOM-Net Impact members data
Research names of previous SOM-Net Impact members from Class of 2003 Class 2008 and gather their current data (job, industry, location, etc.)
Determine the best vehicle to maintain this database (Excel, Facebook, Salesforce.com, etc.)
Organize a social event for current SOM-Net Impact members to network with young alumni
Generate ways to involve young alumni in SOM-Net Impact initiatives

These are the issue areas that are also represented by their own clubs (Business and the Environment, Education, Economic Development, Healthcare, Arts & Culture, etc.). We recommend that you contact the leaders of those clubs directly if you are interested in getting involved in those issue areas.
Philanthropy Conference Committees (email Ian.Moss@yale.edu)
Logistics committee
Coordinate with venue and caterer to ensure a smooth experience for attendees
Manage day-of volunteers, on-site registration, and assorted behind-the-scenes tasks required for event execution
Marketing Committee
Design logo and visual identity for conference
Create and send invitations to students, alumni, and members of the local community
Create and distribute materials to promote the conference
Webmaster
Maintain Philanthropy Conference website, adding schedule and speaker information as it comes in
Coordinate with Marketing Committee and SOM administration to set up online registration and payment
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee (email Madeline.Ravich@yale.edu)
Serve as an information resource for fellow students
Assess CSR interest in first year class, generating ideas for speakers and events
Meet regularly as a group to discuss developments in the field
If interested in a specific aspect of CSR or in CSR in a specific industry or sector, take the lead on relevant events
Sustainability Task Force Members (email Jessica.Strauss@yale.edu)
Define and execute initiatives to increase adoption of environmentally sustainable behaviors among the SOM community
Measure and benchmark effectiveness of these initiatives
Advocate for environmental sustainability priorities in the planning of the new SOM campus
Public Sector Liaison (email Janhabi.Nandy@yale.edu)
Assess public sector interest in first year class, generating ideas for speakers and events
Assist with logistics and communications (particularly to first-year class) for events
If interested, assist with coordination of Spring Break DC trip (meeting leaders from federal government, NGOs, and foreign governments) NOTE: a separate committee to organize this trip will be formed next month.
Social Enterprise Liaison (email Catherine.Manzo@yale.edu)
Business plan development. Help organize events to better prepare SOM students interested in social entrepreneurship to submit plans to relevant business plan competitions. Workshops will include: How to write a business plan & How to perform a social impact assessment
Alumni connections. Work with the CDO and Alumni Office to compile a database of alumni in the social enterprise field and survey them (This is critical since the alumni database online does not allow students to search in this manner!)
Networking outside SOM. Identify social enterprise related conferences, workshops and events in the NYC, New Haven, and Boston areas and potentially facilitate logistics for students to attend
Global Social Venture Competition. For the past two years, SOM has served as a regional partner school for the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC). First years interested in learning more about the activities related to partner school responsibilities should come to a short meeting. We will also be discussing whether SOM should continue its role with GSVC and determine other activities that will be helpful for students with social enterprise/social entrepreneurship interests.
